10 Sites to Discover this Weekend - Sept 5

I’ve really been enjoying the link love lately, and I know that I always appreciate when people I trust make good recommendations to me.  I found dozens of great new sites this week, just from reading blogs I subscribe to via Google Reader.  So, for the time being, I’ll continue to share some of my favorite sites/posts of the week with you each Friday.  Feel free to let me know your feedback, and definitely let me know of any recommendations you have as well.

So, here are 10 sites I’d recommend checking out when you get some time this weekend:

1.  Zen Habits new Reddit community - I used to have a really hard time finding articles of interest to me on Reddit, but since I joined this sub-community I’m enjoying the leads submitted by other members.  If you’re not familiar with Reddit, it’s a social news site similar to Digg or Mixx that allows you to submit and vote on articles.

2.  Attention Ladies, Saving Money Tops List of Frugal Male Turn Ons - Frugal Dad - Bet you won’t find that headline in FHM or Maxim! It is so true though. Find ways to save money, and you’ll gain a whole new level of respect and sexiness in a frugal male’s eyes.

3.  Offline Customers: Do You Make Room for Non-Bloggers to Comment at Successful Blog - this is a great guest post by Scott McIntyre on Liz Strauss’ Successful Blog.  I’ve talked to several people lately about different ways to encourage non-bloggers to engage with your site and join the conversation happening in the comments.  Most “average” readers come to a site, read the article, process the information and then move on, like reading a magazine or newspaper; however, blogs are designed to be interactive, so you need to find ways to help them understand that you actually want them to comment.  This article gives some great tips.

4.  Moving with the Kids - The Pre-Move and Moving with the Kids - The Move at Dad of Divas (3-part series) - If you’re thinking of moving or involved in a move with kids, this is a good series to read.

5.  The Preemie Adventure - Jennifer at The Playpen - As many of you know, the recent experience Lori (my wife) and I had with our daughter’s premature birth and subsequent illnesses has made me appreciate life and my kids more than ever; however, when I read Jennifer’s story about her son Kyle, I was reminded of how much worse things could have been for us.  I don’t want to ruin it for you, so block out 15 minutes and read this article.

6.  What Google Chrome Gets Right at LouisGray.com - Are you using Firefox?  Great, me too and I love it! When the Google Chrome web browser came out this week though, I have to admit that I downloaded it immediately to see what it could do.  I could not describe it better than Phil Glockner did in a guest post for Louis.  If you’re one of the millions still using Internet Explorer and refuse to switch to Firefox, then you should at least give Chrome a try - it’s speed will blow you away.

7.  Round 7 Accepted Sites at 9Rules - see if you can tell why I’m recommending this link ;-) More to come on this next week. Congrats to the sites selected for this great network.

8.  The Rumors Were Greatly Exaggerated at Joeprah - After going MIA for a month, the rumors started flying about my boy Joeprah.  Give a shout out to this fellow dad blogger from MD.  Glad your back bro!

9.  Give Them What They Want at A Family Runs Through It - I like this post because it gives me something I want, which is another strategy for getting my kids to do things in a way that they feel like they’re making the decision.  It’s a guest post by Dr. Rajiv Vaidyanathan.

10.  Things to Do While Your Waiting for Your Baby to Recognize You at Dad or Bust - It is so cool when your newborn first recognizes who you are, and then when he/she calls you “dada” for the first time it nearly melts your heart.  In the meantime, here’s some more things to do to keep you busy while you wait.

Bonus: Today (Friday, Sept 5th) is the last day to enter the Reading is Fundamental Book Recommendation Contest.  All you have to do is leave a comment with your favorite book that you last read.  Very easy, and there will be 5 randomly selected winners chosen to receive 10 books each for free from Hachette Book Group.

I hope you all have a great weekend!  We’ve got another family birthday party to attend, as well as the local fair in my wife’s home town.  Feel free to share any recommendations you have for people in the comments section of this post too.
