Spotlight on Dads – Matt Haverkamp
This week’s spotlight shines on Matt from DC Urban Dad. As a relatively new dad, Matt is discovering all kinds of things about fatherhood and the challenges of bringing up a child in a big city. Although he does have some previous acting experience, he’s learning fast that there is no script for the role of dad.

Reading is fundamental. Sound familiar? This statement is a simple yet powerful truth. Reading is a fundamental way to learn and grow as a person. It helps to increase understanding of the past and present; it expands your mind and stimulates your brain; it is entertaining; and, it is the gateway to a more creative world that is full of possibilities and other wonderful things.

How Have Economic Pressures Affected Your Home?
Like most families in America, my wife and I have made certain choices to adjust to the current economic climate. We have looked at creative ways of increasing income, but mostly we have chosen to cut expenses. We are extremely thankful that the choices we make are not between feeding our children and paying the mortgage like so many others

Make Time for Yourself – Know When to Tap Out
I’m exhausted after a long day at work. All I want to do is go home and relax. As a parent, though, my day is not done when work is over. Parenting is my second full-time job. It’s challenging to maintain a balanced life with so many competing priorities at work and home. Every once in a while, I need a break from things to recharge my batteries and find that balance.

Mud Bog Races – Fun Father Son Day
Every year the local fire company puts on a very popular event on the outskirts of our city. It’s called a mud bog, which is essentially drag racing for country folk. We live in what is called a suburb of Washington, DC, but it is still very much a rural area at the base of the Allegheny mountains. People come from far-and-wide for three things around here – karaoke, gun bonanzas and the annual mud bog races.

Discovering Dad is a site about “learning what it means to be a good dad,” and to me, good dads don’t give up. The learn how to adapt; they grow up; they evolve; and, they love their kids no matter what, even if their kids don’t seem to love them back. However, as dads, we don’t only learn from our experiences as fathers ourselves – we learn from the example that was also set in our own homes. So, good or bad, what kind of dad did you have?

It’s easy to be frantic, stressed-out and uptight, given the kinds of trials that are foisted upon me on a daily basis. As a fresh example, not more than an hour ago as I write this, my 4-year-old son Michael brought me to my boiling point for probably the fifteenth time today.

How Superman Made Me a Better Father
To many, it might seem odd for a guy in his mid-thirties to be such a huge fan of Superman. If I worked in the comic book industry, or if I was a serious collector it would make more sense – but I am neither. In fact, I wasn’t even interested in The Man of Steel until a few years ago when I first moved to Chicago.

Surviving Two Weeks of Family Vacation
With Mommy and our five-year-old daughter stricken with strep, I was responsible for keeping our three-year-old twin boys alive, something that I take for granted when I am at home and working most of the time. After the better part of three days, they were angry and I was ready to die. I kept thinking, if only I could get back to work for a bit of rest!

Husbands & Dads – It’s Cool to be a Family Man
I’m psyched to announce the official launch of Husbands & Dads, a community “where it’s cool to be a family man!” This project originated several months ago through an exchange of Twitter messages between me and Cory from A Good Husband. We both wanted to create something that would build on our existing efforts and appeal to a broad range of men who wanted to live well and take care of their family.

When I was growing up, I was always the daredevil of the neighborhood. I had no fear. I was also slightly accident prone, which didn’t mix well with my willingness to constantly step out on the edge. I had several hundred stitches and multiple broken bones by the time I was 10 years old.

Spotlight on Dads – Chris Lewis
This week’s spotlight shines on Chris from Dad of Divas. Chris is the lone man in a house full of ladies/divas, and he’s been trying to take back his kingdom unsuccessfully for a few years now. Rather than fight it though, he seems to genuinely enjoy spending quality time with the family.
