Have You Really Hugged Your Kids Today?

A lot of guys aren’t very comfortable vocalizing their feelings, and some men struggle with showing affection to the ones they love most. An easy way to demonstrate to your children that you love them is to give them a hug. Even when they don’t ask for one, most kids will be more than happy to accept a hug at any time

Stolen Moments – Making Time to be a Couple

Early Thursday morning, while the house was dark and still, my wife and I very quietly slipped out the front door and drove away. My wife and I were engaged in theft: We were stealing time. The kids would never suspect a thing.

Spotlight on Dads – Kevin Bushbaker

This week’s spotlight shines on Kevin Bushbaker from Return to Manliness. Kevin is a relatively new adoptive father, and I admire the patience with which he and his wife waited to become parents. The process of adopting a child has definitely instilled an added sense of appreciation in Kevin for his new and exciting role as a dad.

In Part 1 of this series we uncovered the 2 most common dads out there. Joe, the “Skinny-Fat Dad” needs more energy and just needs to feel like he’s back in shape. 10 Ways to Pull Off the Perfect Disagreement

Are you the type of person who can argue and disagree with others? Or, do you let people walk all over you? There are many who avoid confrontation at all costs, while others are more than willing to jump in and argue away. Some are even uncomfortable disagreeing with their spouse, while others may have a problem challenging any type of authority.

Dad and Teacher – Choosing to Homeschool

Ten years ago, when my wife and I first decided that I should be a stay-at-home dad, most of my friends didn’t understand why I’d want to take on that challenge. Many of them abandoned me over time. Eight years later, I lost the rest of them when we made another huge family decision. To pull my son out of public school and teach him at home. I would be both “dad” and “teacher.”

Fitness for Dads – Getting in Shape: Part 1

It’s all happened to us before. It’s late at night. You just get home from one of those crazy parties with the in-laws. The kids are asleep in the back (for me, all 4 of them are asleep) and you don’t want to wake them. So now, you have the task of picking them up out of their seats, laying their heavy heads on your shoulder and carrying them from the car into bed. Sound familiar? I do it almost every time we have a family get together.

Spotlight on Dads – Joey Guido

This week’s spotlight shines on Joey from Daddy Brain. Joey is a smart guy who shares some great insights on his blog, so if you’re looking for a place to spark your “brain,” then check him out. Tell a little about yourself. My name is Joey Donovan Guido & I am a professional copywriter living in Madison, Wisconsin. I am originally from NY, but the need for a steady income to support my family led me to the mid west.

A Father’s Pride: Helping His Son Become a Star

Most dads dream about his little boy playing college football or being a major league baseball player. It is in the Dad DNA. But mostly, it is a dream so that we can keep our mind from wandering during all those never ending T-Ball games. I lived that dream and I thought my, er, our story would be helpful to others.

Depression Sucks – One Dad Shares his Story

Depression sucks. It sucks the life out of a person. Going untreated it can affect not only you but also those you care about the most. Your family and friends may not know what it is about you that makes you the way you are unless you tell them. Most people who have depression never seek help and go through life with a black hole in the pit of their soul.

I’m very proud to formally announce that Discovering Dad was selected to be a member of the 9Rules Network. Many of you may have noticed the new icon with the distinctive leaf on the sidebar. Transition – Five Songs that Make Me Think

I’ve been going through a transition in my life for a few months now. It started a couple weeks after we brought our newest daughter Caitlin home from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after a rough start to her life. By all accounts, the experience of seeing her fight through such a tough situation had both a saddening and inspirational affect on me.

Spotlight on Dads – Clay Nichols

This week’s spotlight shines on Clay Nichols, aka Daddy Clay, from DadLabs. I had a chance to talk with Clay recently, and I’m very excited about the things he and the DadLabs crew have going on right now. Their popular videos promote responsible fatherhood, and they probably some of the most positive viral content relating to dads on the Internet.

Harry Potter Adventure of a Lifetime Contest

The thing I love about the Harry Potter books and films are the thrills and adventures of Harry and his friends. The mix of action, suspense and competition engages me in ways that few other stories can. As I read these books by author J.K. Rowling, I’m reminded that life is meant to be an adventure and the journey is worth documenting.

License to Play

A really cool thing I hadn’t considered before my first child came along is that having kids is a license to do kid stuff again. It’s a license to play. A grown person playing hopscotch or setting up troops of little green army men would be considered bizarre unless that person were playing along with a kid. You have a kid, and you get a free pass to have fun.

Top 10 Reasons Why Dads are Hotter than Guys Without Kids

The other day I was eating lunch with my daughter Frankie. We were enjoying cream cheese and jelly sandwiches. As meals sometimes go in my house, it turned into a battle of wits to see who could trick the other into taking a bite. After a mad flurry of bites mixed with screams and giggles, I ended up with cream cheese smeared on my face and strawberry preserves matted into my hair. It was HOT!
