A Lot Can Happen in a Week

This has been a busy yet exciting week. You know, the kind of week where it’s hard to get caught up on things. The days go by so fast that you end up wondering where the time went, but when you look back on things you feel a sense of accomplishment.

I’ve been working on several great projects lately, and I wanted to take a quick minute to share some of them with you.

Projects I’ve been working on recently:

What Dads Think Series - this was a HUGE success, and I was so thankful for the open and honest communication had by hundreds of readers about topics that tend to be avoided by most parents and couples.  If you missed this series, it is definitely worth going back and reading.  Feel free to add your thoughts too.

Spotlight on Dads badgeSpotlight on Dads Series - this series continues to highlight some amazing and involved dads.  I look forward to sharing information about another Dad every Saturday morning.  Thanks to iVegasDad for suggesting and helping me to create new super badges for these super dads to take with them back to their sites.

Blogging Idol - I decided to enter the Blogging Idol competition hosted by Daniel at Daily Blog Tips because I want to focus on expanding this site.  Discovering Dad has the potential to be both a fun blog that chronicles my personal experiences about “learning what it means to be a good Dad” and a resource site for dads and parents. The competition is based on increasing RSS and e-mail subscribers, so I’ve been working on various strategies both on and off the site. Two specific strategies I’ll share are the Top Referrer Contest and adding the What Would Seth Godin Do Wordpress Plugin to the site (it’s the small box that greets you when you view individual post pages).

Facebook Pages - I’ve had a Facebook account for a while, but I never did anything with it. A few weeks ago, though, I started getting friend requests daily from bloggers and people I went to school with in the past.  Needless to say, it got me thinking about the opportunity to connect with people through this site.  I beefed up my personal page; created a page for Discovering Dad; got the site included as part of the Facebook blog network; and, created a group for Daddy Bloggers to join.

MySpace Page - OK, so I’m not a big fan of MySpace in general.  In my mind, it is my teenage daughters social networking community.  I have a personal account there, so that I can spy monitor my daughter’s page.  A few bloggers have said that they have benefited from creating a page for their blog, but I wasn’t convinced.  My daughter really wanted to do something to help Discovering Dad though, so I offered to let her create a MySpace page for the site.  We went through several different designs, and ultimately, ended up with a simple yet effective one.  It was something fun for us to do together.

cre8Buzz - If you’re not aware, I am one of the Advisory Board members (BuzzBoard) for cre8Buzz.  This is a social network that helps bloggers to connect and gain exposure for content they create or share.  There is also a unique community blog called The Anthill that I contribute to about once a month.  The site has grown consistently since coming out of Beta earlier this year; however, like many sites, it hasn’t grown as quickly as the company and community members would have liked.  The executives/founders of the community have done a great job of engaging the Buzzboard and regular community members to help them overcome obstacles and achieve goals.  I’ve been happy to spend some extra time lately helping this community, and I would definitely recommend any blogger of any niche to join.

Mama Nuggle - After months of peer pressure, and a guest appearance on the What Moms Think Series, my wife Lori has finally joined the blogging world.  Two weeks ago, I spent 3 days registering her domain, helping her pick a Wordpress theme and customizing the site.  This past week, I’ve spent several hours teaching her how to use the site, as well as getting her blog inserted in the blog communities and search engine indexing cues.  I’ve also helped her set-up and meet lots of great new friends on Twitter.

A Secret Project - Ooohhh-ahhhh. Yes, I do have a secret project that I’ve been working on with another blogger friend for about a month now.  We’re developing a new site that I think will appeal to all of the readers of Discovering Dad.  We plan to officially this new site in about a month, and there will be opportunities for other bloggers to contribute and participate.  More to come.

And finally, for something completely unexpected and shocking (not a project I’ve worked on, but it is something fun that I’m a part of surprisingly)…

I was nominated for the Who is the Hottest Male Blogger? contest over at Jane Porricelli’s blog on Mom Generations.  The contest runs through Monday, July 14th, and it’s really just something for fun that she’s doing.  It’s actually kind of flattering to have been nominated alongside some of the hottest and most successful male bloggers on the planet, but I’m like the old(er) brother of the group of 8 guys nominated (Guy Kawasaki is in there too though, and he’s like the uber-successful and hot patriarch of the bunch).  If you get a minute, head on over and cast your vote ;-)

As you can see, it’s been a busy week for me.  I’m very excited about all of the great stuff happening with Discovering Dad, and I hope that you are too!  I appreciate all of your support and inspiration!

    1. You truly have been busy! I am starting to see that blogging can be a full time business. I would love it if you could get a full time pay with it as well (I know you can…but you have to have the time to make it happen).

    2. I don’t know how you find the time for all of that. My wife hates when I’m on the computer, so I have little time to do much of anything other than quickly jot down a quick blog post.

    3. I’m very lucky that Lori has joined the blogging world and finds value in working on this site and others. I do still have to maintain balance, and not sacrifice quality time with the family for hours on the computer. Nothing is easy if you don’t have the support of your spouse.

    4. I know that you “don’t sleep,” but seriously where do you find the time?!? I’m trying to balance it all these days, and I think I might finally have to cut out or delay some things - just too much!

keep up the good work here - the new layout continues to look awesome.
