What’s Cooking Dad?

While it may seem like more work to have your kids helping to prepare a meal, and it often is – particularly when they’re little – in the end you’ll benefit from having a helper, someone who will be self-sufficient, and who might even cook dinner for you once in awhile.

5 Ways to Prepare Your Kids for a New Sibling

Last April my wife and I received an unexpected reality check: We were pregnant. Again. I’ll be honest with you, it took us a few weeks to warm up to the idea of a third child. We were happy with the two children, and the even numbers made it easy for my wife and I to divide and conquer when it came to bed time and other parental routines.

Max Spaniel Dinosaur Hunt Winners

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Max Spaniel Dinosaur Hunt contest! I really enjoyed reading all of the stories about your favorite pets. There’s definitely a lot of “Dinosaur Hunters” out there, all of whom seem to make a positive difference in our lives.

Favorite Summer Pictures

Summer is my absolute favorite time of year. I love the heat and sunshine – it always puts me in a good mood. I even like the humidity, which my wife thinks is crazy! I like doing things outside, especially with the kids. Going to the park, playing ball and watching my son drench himself with the hose while “helping” wash the car.

Max Spaniel: Dinosaur Hunt Giveaway

It’s been a while since I ran a giveaway for readers. It’s not that I haven’t had opportunities, but the ones presented just haven’t seemed right for the site lately. Everyone loves pets though, and my kids instantly took to this fun new book by David Catrow called Max Spaniel: Dinosaur Hunt.

Knowing When the Job is Done

One of the things I hope to do as he’s growing up is to teach my young son how to do a job the right way, from start to finish. I’d like to teach him about starting well, executing well, and finishing well.

Discovering Dad Reflections on 2008

Happy New Year everyone! Sorry it’s been a while since my last post, but my work and family has needed me to focus on them over the past month. I hope you had an awesome holiday season and are looking forward to a great 2009! I’m confident 2009 will be a year of positive change.

Avoiding Chaotic Meals

By the time I’ve finished working all day and have battled through evening rush hour traffic, the last thing I want to deal with at home is more chaos. It’s taken a long time, but my wife and I have come up with some ways that work well for our family to make dinner time a little bit more relaxed and less anxious.

15 Fun Activities for Dads with Preschoolers

Little kids can get majorly bored. My four-year-old son Michael, when he gets bored (and that’s every night), hops around like a jackrabbit with its tail on fire, bouncing off of this bit of furniture and that, twirling and spinning, knocking over whatever might be in his path. It’s not a pretty sight.

Kids – How Many Are Too Many?

This article written by Contributing Writer Matt Pfingsten.
I live in Southern California. There are a LOT of people here, and the population grows exponentially every year. Traffic worsens, smog thickens and violence increases. Why don’t I just come right out and say it? It is packed full-o-people. One would be hard-pressed [...]

Have You Really Hugged Your Kids Today?

A lot of guys aren’t very comfortable vocalizing their feelings, and some men struggle with showing affection to the ones they love most. An easy way to demonstrate to your children that you love them is to give them a hug. Even when they don’t ask for one, most kids will be more than happy to accept a hug at any time

Harry Potter Adventure of a Lifetime Contest

The thing I love about the Harry Potter books and films are the thrills and adventures of Harry and his friends. The mix of action, suspense and competition engages me in ways that few other stories can. As I read these books by author J.K. Rowling, I’m reminded that life is meant to be an adventure and the journey is worth documenting.

License to Play

A really cool thing I hadn’t considered before my first child came along is that having kids is a license to do kid stuff again. It’s a license to play. A grown person playing hopscotch or setting up troops of little green army men would be considered bizarre unless that person were playing along with a kid. You have a kid, and you get a free pass to have fun.

Mud Bog Races – Fun Father Son Day

Every year the local fire company puts on a very popular event on the outskirts of our city. It’s called a mud bog, which is essentially drag racing for country folk. We live in what is called a suburb of Washington, DC, but it is still very much a rural area at the base of the Allegheny mountains. People come from far-and-wide for three things around here – karaoke, gun bonanzas and the annual mud bog races.

Surviving Two Weeks of Family Vacation

With Mommy and our five-year-old daughter stricken with strep, I was responsible for keeping our three-year-old twin boys alive, something that I take for granted when I am at home and working most of the time. After the better part of three days, they were angry and I was ready to die. I kept thinking, if only I could get back to work for a bit of rest!
