License to Play

A really cool thing I hadn’t considered before my first child came along is that having kids is a license to do kid stuff again. It’s a license to play. A grown person playing hopscotch or setting up troops of little green army men would be considered bizarre unless that person were playing along with a kid. You have a kid, and you get a free pass to have fun.

Mud Bog Races – Fun Father Son Day

Every year the local fire company puts on a very popular event on the outskirts of our city. It’s called a mud bog, which is essentially drag racing for country folk. We live in what is called a suburb of Washington, DC, but it is still very much a rural area at the base of the Allegheny mountains. People come from far-and-wide for three things around here – karaoke, gun bonanzas and the annual mud bog races.

Surviving Two Weeks of Family Vacation

With Mommy and our five-year-old daughter stricken with strep, I was responsible for keeping our three-year-old twin boys alive, something that I take for granted when I am at home and working most of the time. After the better part of three days, they were angry and I was ready to die. I kept thinking, if only I could get back to work for a bit of rest!

Family Fun at the Zoo

We’re fortunate to live in an area where we have access to three zoos. The National Zoo is less than an hour away. The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is within two hours. The Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo is only thirty minutes from our house, so it was an easy choice to pick for a family fun day.

5 Life Lessons the Olympics Can Help Teach Kids

The Olympics have always inspired me. One of my earliest memories is of sitting on the living room floor of our home in 1976 watching the Summer Olympic games in Montreal. It was a small black-and-white TV, but I was still enthralled with the many athletes from around the world.

My Toddler’s Top 5 Favorite Things

My 2-year-old son has already gone through many phases. When he first started becoming mobile and active, he really liked to play on his aquarium floor mat, spin in his exer-saucer, push around his blocks and watch Baby Einstein DVDs. A few months later, he moved on to cars, the ball popper toy and Little Einsteins.

Family Fun at the Beach and Boardwalk

We went on a short family vacation last week to Ocean City for four days. The kids had a blast playing on the beach, even though the water felt like we had a swim call on an Alaskan cruise liner. I don’t understand the science behind ocean water temperature

Memories that Last a Lifetime

We went up to the mountains a few weekends ago. We had the opportunity to rent a quaint little cabin form a friend of Aline’s on the cheap, so we jumped on it. If you have never spent time in the Angeles Forest, I recommend it. I’ve seen a lot of the U.S. landscape, and the California mountains are beautiful and unique in a way that few areas rival.

Top 10 Summer Activities for Dad and Kids

Summertime is a fun time for Dads to do interesting activities with the kids. The weather is nice, and it’s a good time of year to have an adventure. Most importantly, though, it is a great time of year to connect with kids and do things that will create memories for years to come. With that in mind, here is my list…

You Are Your Child’s Favorite Toy

This is a guest post by Daniel from deguia.net. Being a father and raising two great kids is, hands down, the single thing that I am the most proud of. My two children, ages 7 and 3, keep me constantly on my toes and just when I think I’ve got them pegged – their likes [...]

Kung Fu Panda is a Great Movie for Dads and Kids

Action, adventure, comedy and Kung Fu – what more could a Dad want in a movie? I took my daughter Chani to see the movie Kung Fu Panda today, and I’ve got to say it was one of the best kid movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a classic good versus evil tale, [...]

Enjoying Nature – Waterfalls and Mountain Tops

I love being outside in the summertime.  The warm feeling of the sun on my face; the slightly sticky feeling of a mildly humid day; and, the multitude of fun and healthy things to do with family and friends.  I really enjoy going hiking, and I wish I made time to do it more often.  [...]

Family Time is the Best Time

I love the summertime.  It’s definitely my favorite time of year.  It’s so much easier to do things together as a family when the weather is nice outside.  My oldest daughter Chani gets to spend multiple weeks with us in the summer, and having her around just warms my heart.  Lori and I also planned [...]

Predict Your Kids Future

One of the things that comes up often in my family is conversations about what our kids might be like when they grow up. Everything from eye and hair color, height, weight, smarts, athleticism, skills and personality is pondered. It’s fun to speculate, but we don’t obsess over it. I found a few really cool [...]

Memories of Home

I grew up in a small community nestled in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. It was a farming and coal mining town, but tourism has become the biggest industry there now. There is a large, beautiful lake, several rivers with gorgeous waterfalls, state parks with an abundance of wildlife and lots of outdoor activities [...]
