Avoiding Chaotic Meals
By the time I’ve finished working all day and have battled through evening rush hour traffic, the last thing I want to deal with at home is more chaos. It’s taken a long time, but my wife and I have come up with some ways that work well for our family to make dinner time a little bit more relaxed and less anxious.

We stand in line at the ATM, or while talking to the other dads at our kid’s soccer game or when we’re sitting at our desk in the office. No matter where we are, our posture is terrible!
Posture is one of those things that, if not paid any attention to, can really start to affect our health later on in life. Poor posture can be attributed mainly to what we do everyday and living what I like to call an “anterior dominant” life.

Little kids can get majorly bored. My four-year-old son Michael, when he gets bored (and that’s every night), hops around like a jackrabbit with its tail on fire, bouncing off of this bit of furniture and that, twirling and spinning, knocking over whatever might be in his path. It’s not a pretty sight.

As a dad, it is important to me that I role model civic responsibility to my kids, and the first and most important way that I do that is by exercising my right to vote. The second way I do this is by getting informed and understanding the issues and candidates positions on them. The third way I do this is by getting involved.

I grew up in a small town nestled in the mountains of Western Maryland. It was a coal mining town, and the majority of jobs available were for unskilled labor. People didn’t make a lot of money, but they did what was necessary to get by and provide the basics for their family. I saw poverty but not enough to really think about it.

Unlike my friends who spent the summer before sophomore year working and partying, I shipped off on a summer tour of duty. I flew with my fellow swabs in the cargo bay of a C130 airplane across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal.

Early Thursday morning, while the house was dark and still, my wife and I very quietly slipped out the front door and drove away. My wife and I were engaged in theft: We were stealing time. The kids would never suspect a thing.

Most dads dream about his little boy playing college football or being a major league baseball player. It is in the Dad DNA. But mostly, it is a dream so that we can keep our mind from wandering during all those never ending T-Ball games. I lived that dream and I thought my, er, our story would be helpful to others.

Depression sucks. It sucks the life out of a person. Going untreated it can affect not only you but also those you care about the most. Your family and friends may not know what it is about you that makes you the way you are unless you tell them. Most people who have depression never seek help and go through life with a black hole in the pit of their soul.

I’m very proud to formally announce that Discovering Dad was selected to be a member of the 9Rules Network. Many of you may have noticed the new icon with the distinctive leaf on the sidebar. For those of you who may not be familiar with 9Rules, this is a pretty big deal. The network aggregates and promotes “the best content from the independent web.”

The thing I love about the Harry Potter books and films are the thrills and adventures of Harry and his friends. The mix of action, suspense and competition engages me in ways that few other stories can. As I read these books by author J.K. Rowling, I’m reminded that life is meant to be an adventure and the journey is worth documenting.

The other day I was eating lunch with my daughter Frankie. We were enjoying cream cheese and jelly sandwiches. As meals sometimes go in my house, it turned into a battle of wits to see who could trick the other into taking a bite. After a mad flurry of bites mixed with screams and giggles, I ended up with cream cheese smeared on my face and strawberry preserves matted into my hair. It was HOT!

Integrity is generally defined as adhering to a specific moral code or set of values. A person with integrity is someone you can trust and rely upon to do what is right, even if it’s not popular. As a parent, I believe my words and actions mean something to my kids - they watch and learn from my example, so acting with integrity is critical if I want them to grow into responsible and trustworthy individuals.

Discovering Dad is a site about “learning what it means to be a good dad,” and to me, good dads don’t give up. The learn how to adapt; they grow up; they evolve; and, they love their kids no matter what, even if their kids don’t seem to love them back. However, as dads, we don’t only learn from our experiences as fathers ourselves - we learn from the example that was also set in our own homes. So, good or bad, what kind of dad did you have?
