Key Learning from Blogging Idol
Discovering Dad was a proud participant in the first ever Blogging Idol contest hosted by Daniel at Daily Blog Tips. The challenge for all competitors was to see who could get the biggest increase in subscribers, as measured by Feedburner, during the month of July. Here’s what I learned:

You Are My Idol – Week 3 Winner and Blogging Idol Update
What a difference a week can make. After hitting a new high of 309 subscribers last week, then sinking to a low of 274 subscribers by week’s end, I am very excited that the count has risen back up to a respectable 340 subscribers as of today. Thanks to your outstanding support, Discovering Dad is turning in a respectable performance in the Blogging Idol competition hosted at Daily Blog Tips.

Daniel Hughes is a family man and a blogger. He and nine of his friends will be undertaking a hike of roughly 80 miles over the course of six days through a rural part of England (eerily close to where they filmed An American Werewolf in London, I’m told) to raise money and awareness for the Joseph Salmon Trust Fund.

Weekly Winner and Blogging Idol Update
At the beginning of the competition, Discovering Dad had 279 subscribers, so you can imagine my dismay when the subscriber count plummeted from a high of 309 to a low of 274 last week. I don’t quite understand how Feedburner tracks the counts, but it always seems to fluctuate over the weekends. Wackadoo, right? Well, [...]

Kung Fu Panda is a Great Movie for Dads and Kids
Action, adventure, comedy and Kung Fu – what more could a Dad want in a movie? I took my daughter Chani to see the movie Kung Fu Panda today, and I’ve got to say it was one of the best kid movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a classic good versus evil tale, [...]

Ask Discovering Dad – The Answers
Catherine asks “What would you do if one of your daughters came home pregnant before you felt she was ready, and how would you treat the guy?” Nothing like throwing me into the deep end of the pool right off the bat! Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do. It would depend on the [...]

This has been a busy yet exciting week. You know, the kind of week where it’s hard to get caught up on things. The days go by so fast that you end up wondering where the time went, but when you look back on things you feel a sense of accomplishment. I’ve been working on [...]

Predict Your Kids Future
One of the things that comes up often in my family is conversations about what our kids might be like when they grow up. Everything from eye and hair color, height, weight, smarts, athleticism, skills and personality is pondered. It’s fun to speculate, but we don’t obsess over it. I found a few really cool [...]

Every once in a while I like to participate in events that challenge me. You know, something to motivate me to do things differently, examine alternative points of view and think about new ways to learn and grow. Some people like to take a class; others sign-up for karate or break dancing lessons. Me, I [...]

Facebook is one of those phenomenons that I was very slow to realize or understand. Even today, my personal profile only has a handful of friends. For me, Facebook is like LinkedIn for personal use. It’s neat how I have been able to reconnect with friends from the past and present on both networks, but [...]

Discovering Dad on Soapbox Radio – The Podcast
I had a great time as a guest on Soapbox Radio today, and I really appreciate all of the people who tuned into the live show and participated in the online chat room. It’s always a little uncomfortable to spend an hour talking about myself, but I think Nicole (Soapbox Mom) did a great job [...]
