Sweating the Small Stuff

I’ve often heard the old saw “Don’t sweat the small stuff” and the lesser-known corollary: “It’s all small stuff.” Whoever wrote these maxims must not have had to take care of any small children.

Kids - How Many Are Too Many?

This article written by Contributing Writer Matt Pfingsten.
I live in Southern California. There are a LOT of people here, and the population grows exponentially every year. Traffic worsens, smog thickens and violence increases. Why don’t I just come right out and say it? It is packed full-o-people. One would be hard-pressed [...]

Dad and Teacher - Choosing to Homeschool

Ten years ago, when my wife and I first decided that I should be a stay-at-home dad, most of my friends didn’t understand why I’d want to take on that challenge. Many of them abandoned me over time. Eight years later, I lost the rest of them when we made another huge family decision. To pull my son out of public school and teach him at home. I would be both “dad” and “teacher.”

Depression Sucks - One Dad Shares his Story

Depression sucks. It sucks the life out of a person. Going untreated it can affect not only you but also those you care about the most. Do You Role Model Integrity for Your Kids?

Integrity is generally defined as adhering to a specific moral code or set of values. A person with integrity is someone you can trust and rely upon to do what is right, even if it’s not popular. As a parent, I believe my words and actions mean something to my kids - they watch and learn from my example, so acting with integrity is critical if I want them to grow into responsible and trustworthy individuals.

Parenting Beyond the Boiling Point

It’s easy to be frantic, stressed-out and uptight, given the kinds of trials that are foisted upon me on a daily basis. As a fresh example, not more than an hour ago as I write this, my 4-year-old son Michael brought me to my boiling point for probably the fifteenth time today.

How Superman Made Me a Better Father

To many, it might seem odd for a guy in his mid-thirties to be such a huge fan of Superman. If I worked in the comic book industry, or if I was a serious collector it would make more sense - but I am neither. In fact, I wasn’t even interested in The Man of Steel until a few years ago when I first moved to Chicago.

Do I Make My Kids’ World Bigger or Smaller?

When I was growing up, I was always the daredevil of the neighborhood. I had no fear. I was also slightly accident prone, which didn’t mix well with my willingness to constantly step out on the edge. I had several hundred stitches and multiple broken bones by the time I was 10 years old.

5 Life Lessons the Olympics Can Help Teach Kids

The Olympics have always inspired me. One of my earliest memories is of sitting on the living room floor of our home in 1976 watching the Summer Olympic games in Montreal. It was a small black-and-white TV, but I was still enthralled with the many athletes from around the world.
