Pingu is a Cheeky Little Penguin
February 14th, 2008 • Related • Filed Under
Pingu is a popular claymation kids’ show on the Sprout network. As an adult, when I first saw this show, I thought to myself, “Why would any kid like to watch this? They don’t even talk!” Well, it just goes to show you what I know. My son Ty loves it.
Every time this cheeky little penguin laughs or gets into trouble, Ty giggles hysterically. He also likes the seal, Robbie, and the baby, Pinga. Apparently this show has been around since the mid-80s, but somehow Pingu has remained 5-years-old.
I have to admit that once I gave the show a chance it did get better. I actually stayed interested throughout an entire episode about Pingu and Robbie playing with a fish. The claymation is well-done, and the stories seem to be simple for kids to follow. I guess that’s why it’s been around for so long!
Pingu is a British creation, and the official website states that the show helps to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
The website also gives several interesting facts about Pingu, including:
- Pingu is a fan of Boogaloo and Eskimo Disco
- The show started in 1984
- It takes one full day to animate eight seconds of Pingu
- The setting for Pingu is Antarctica
- Pingu’s DAD is the local postman
If you want a very simple yet entertaining show to allow your kids to watch, then Ty and I would both recommend Pingu - he’s a cheeky little penguin!

Great post!
Since 1984?! I’m amazed that I’ve never seen this little guy. I just checked out the website — Pingu’s adorable! I’ll show my kids (even though they’re a bit older).
It seems there’s something about penguins that just naturally attracts kids (Surf’s Up, Happy Feet, March of the Penguins).
Hmmm. I bet it’s just a matter of time before Ty discovers Club Penguin (my kids’ favorite site).

Thanks! My son really likes Happy Feet too. He hasn’t watched some of the others you mentioned, so I’ll have to see if we can get them. Kids and penguins - go figure!

I’m hopeing Luke gets addicted to Baseball, instead of shows like this, once we finally let him watch tv, which won’t be for a while yet. i am still in that delusional phase.

I am an avid watcher of Pingu (not really by choice)my 2 girls crack up to when he laughs or does anything. He speaks a universal language, universal in the fact that no one on earth seems to know what he is saying. It keeps my 2 happy though.

James,
I want Ty to be addicted to sports too! You’ve got a stronger will than me not to let Luke watch TV, especially during the winter months. We go outside a lot when its warm, but lately it’s been below freezing in the metro-DC area. I set-up a slide and tent/fort inside for him to play with and get exercise, but I definitely need something beyond that to entertain him so I can get work done too. It’s a challenge!

Michael,
Ha! It’s definitely a universal language alright, but only kids can translate it.

What are your thoughts on Yo Gabba Gabba?? I hope that I didn’t miss that post - I am new to your blog. My 8 year old calls it braincheese…I would have to say that I agree.

Hey L.A. Mama - Welcome! Ty isn’t watching Yo Gabba Gabba yet. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the comment, and please feel free to share your thoughts again!

Pingu is definitely the greatest penguin on earth! He also had quite an adventurous life since he made all his films. Being a grown-up - and having met his fiance Pingvina - he now writes his life story on a blog, check it out: http://www.pingukids.blogspot.com/

[...] Pingu is a cheeky penguin. He goes around getting into trouble all of the time, messing things up and, then, finding a way to make everything all better again. Along the way, he squawks mmwwaaahh-whaaah and a bunch of other gibberish with his family and buddies. In short, it is the dumbest kids show on the planet, but my son would ask for it multiple times a day…every day…for months. [...]
