Tip of the Week – Lijit Advanced Search Plug-in

Some of you may have noticed that I’ve been testing an Advanced Search option from a company called Lijit. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been impressed with what this plug-in can do. It’s like the Maserati of search (see Advanced Search plug-in on sidebar).

The coolest thing about Lijit is that it not only searches my blog, but also all of my activity from throughout the social media world. In addition, it gives users the option to see search results in all of the blogs that I like, as well as the entire web. It allows you to set-up a network of blogs to include in tabbed results, and it can import all of the blogs from your MyBlogLog communities (feel free to join the Discovering Dad community).

In addition to all of this, it has a cool Surprise Me button that allows you to explore random pages from my site and my network (kind of like StumbleUpon).

If you haven’t tried the Advanced Search option here before, give it a whirl and see where it takes you. It adds several new and useful dimensions to search. If you have a blog of your own, I would definitely recommend testing it on your site. Feel free to add me to your network!

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

  1. I don’t need another thing to keep up with, but I like the way it looks on your blog. I’ll check it out since it seems to work for you.

  2. I know the feeling Tyler! One benefit of this tool, though, for people like you and I who publish blogs, is that it helps to promote our niche, which is why I was first attracted to it.

  3. Since I am not much of a techie, I’ll need to get my wife to help me with this.

  4. Paul,

Do a few keyword searches on it, and you’ll see that it’s pretty straight forward. If you want to add it to your site and need help, just let me know!

  5. Ligit is from Denver, and it is VERY cool.

Incidentally, if you show them your tata’s, they give you a tshirt.

    Just sayin’.

  6. Hey ML! I’ll pass the word on about the tatas – everyone can use a free shirt! Thanks for the tip!

  7. Jeremy, thanks for the kind words about Lijit and your support. In addition to promoting your niche, we also give you detailed stats about what your readers are searching for, what results they’re clicking on and what searches they are doing that aren’t bringing back any results. If you have any other feedback about the wijit, please feel free to email me. I’m tara at lijit dot com.

Oh, and Mr. Lady, we’re actually from Boulder and it’s not a requirement to show us any body parts to get a Lijit t-shirt. Although some of the guys in the office might appreciate it…

  8. Hey thanks for adding that bit of information Tara! I haven’t started to dig too much into the stats yet, but I’ll be interested to look at some of the things you pointed out.

  9. Oh, by the way Tara, does this mean you’ll send me a shirt? ML too? Send me an e-mail at jnbammer@aol.com to let me know:)

  10. pretty slick, I am just finished retooling my blog, but I always like gadgets. I tried searching your blog for Joeprah and found the closest thing to be Oprah…shame on you. :)

  11. Oh that is definitely cool, especially since it allows you to search by other mediums and not only just your blog. We’ve been meaning to add a search to Mommy Daddy Blog since every time a new post is published, an older post is buried deeper and deeper. We’d like for people who weren’t around for the beginning of MDB to find the “old stuff”. So I’m definitely going to check out Ligit!

  12. Dude! You showed up in 3 of the 4 tabs on the search, under My Content, My Network and Web. You didn’t show up in the My Blog search results, even though I have you included in my Links for Dads. Not sure why that happened? You should be part of the Spotlight on Dads series – drop me an e-mail to let me know if you’re interested (jnbammer@aol.com).

  13. Now Joeprah even shows up in my Lijit tag cloud:)

  14. Greg,

I would definitely recommend Lijit search, especially since it seems like you are into technology and stuff. It has a lot of functionality to it, and it should add value to users of the site.

If you’re looking for a basic search option, like the one on my site, send me an e-mail and I’ll send you the code.

  15. Our Blogs, like our kids, need to be protected as they grow. P.U.B. [Publishers Union of Bloggers] has pending inquires to Widget Providers concerning how they generate their income and what percentage of this income goes to the Blog Publisher making the critical decision to allow a Widget on their site for their readers. In addition we are requesting transparency on the critical issue of how the private statistic from Publishers Blogs are being used, hopefully with the Publisher’s permission!

P.U.B. expects to heard back from Lijit on these financial and private statistics issues from P.U.B’s inquiry we sent to Lijit in mid April 2008. When we do we will let great Blog Publishers like you know their deal.
Will publish these results to keep the community of Blog Publishers informed on this critical component of Widgets on our Blogs. Thanks again for being a great dad!

    Sincerely,
