China’s Nio’s first electric sedan, the ET7 packs up to 150 kWh of battery power, all for a much lower price than the Model S.
To do like Tesla, the Chinese manufacturer Nio undertook a “Nio Day” on January 9, 2021. The star of this 3-hour presentation carried out in Chengdu was the ET7 sedan, a production version of the 2019 ET concept that it takes over from 95%.
After 3 SUVs, this is therefore the first model of its kind for Nio. The Tesla inspiration is blatant there. Whether it is the silhouette, the face, the sides or the rims, we note the references to the Model 3. On the other hand, the dimensions exceed those of a Model S with 5.10 meters long and 2 meters wide.
Nothing fancy then, but the batteries could overshadow Elon Musk’s firm. Nio has unveiled a pack with a capacity of up to 150 kWh. A record for a production electric car! The range could reach 1000 km on the NEDC cycle. Two other sizes are available in 100 kWh (700 km) and 70 kWh (500 km).
These batteries power two motors. The first 180 kW (242 hp) permanent magnet is housed at the front, while the second, induction, is located at the rear and offers an output of 300 kW (402 hp). The Nio ET7 thus claims a power of 480 kW (650 hp), and a maximum torque of 850 Nm. The 0-100 km / h goes under 4 seconds (3.9 exactly).

Premium and technological gear
Much like the Lucid Air, Nio applied for the interior. The sleek interior features 10.2-inch digital meters and a large 12.8-inch Mach-E AMOLED touchscreen center display. The aerators are invisible, while the 3 atmospheres to choose from have “karuun” inserts. Derived from the rattan palm tree, this renewable material was already fitted to the Mercedes AVTR concept.
Nio doesn’t skimp on technology. The Chinese electric sedan notably has 5G connectivity and a voice assistant called Nomi. The ET7 also includes standard ventilated / massaging seats as well as road-reading air suspension (like a DS7) and a 23 HP 1,000 W audio system.
Finally, level 3 “NAD” autonomous driving can manage parking, and even battery change. CEO William Li doesn’t hesitate to detail everything like Musk with his “FSD”. The “Adam” computer with Nvidia processors absorbs data from 11 8-megapixel sensor cameras (greater than Tesla’s 1.2 MP), 5 radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and a Lidar. The electric sedan would detect pedestrians and obstacles more than 200 meters away, and even vehicles up to 687 m.
30% cheaper than a Model S
The price of the Nio ET7 starts from 448,000 yuan in the 70 kWh version, or 56,425 euros. The 100 kWh variant climbs to 506,000 yuan (63,730 €). The 100 kWh is therefore 30% cheaper than a Model S. The brand also offers a solution with battery rental. Then count 378,000 yuan (47,600 €) plus 980 yuan / month in 70 kWh (1,480 yuan / month in 100 kWh). Autonomous driving is also offered in the form of monthly payments.
In its 70 and 100 kWh versions, the Nio ET7 will begin deliveries in early 2022. The 150 kWh long-range version will only arrive in a second. China will naturally be the first market to be served, but Nio has already expressed its intention to land in Europe in 2021.
