Sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide since its launch ten years ago, Nissan’s electric car is introducing new equipment for its 2021 range and lowering the prices of its e + version thanks to the introduction of new finishes.
Losing speed in the face of the massive influx of competition, the Nissan Leaf is trying somehow to stay in the race. With 2,759 units sold over the first 10 months of the year, registrations of the sedan fell 15% from last year in a market that was booming. What to encourage the manufacturer to react and to propose some evolutions for the 2021 vintage of its flagship model.
In terms of equipment, new features appear on all the finishes of the 2021 range. The ergonomics are thus improved thanks to a steering wheel now adjustable in height and depth while a blind spot detection device and a lane keeping system reinforce the safety aspect.
Connectivity is also strengthened. The NissanConnect Services application is enhanced with new features, while a wifi hotspot, accessible by subscription, is now available on board.
On the Tekna finish, the interior mirror also evolves with a two-position system: traditional mirror or digital display screen mode which allows you to maintain rear vision without being hampered by the transport of a bulky object or the head of a passenger .
On the technical side, no modification. The electric compact sedan is still available in two versions. Representing more than three quarters of sales, the first combines a 150 horsepower engine with a 40 kWh battery while the second, the Leaf e +, combines a 217 hp block with a 62 kWh pack promising up to 385 km d autonomy in WLTP cycle.
New finishes for the Leaf e +
Long-range version of the Japanese sedan, the Leaf e + is reviewing its range construction. So far only offered with the premium N-Connecta and Acenta finishes, this is now available with the Acenta mid-finish. Accessible from € 40,300 excluding government aid, or € 1,500 less than the N-Connecta, it features adaptive cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, front / rear parking radar, fog lights integrated into the grille, pump heat, automatically folding mirrors, Nissan Connect navigation with 7-inch screen, reversing camera, RDS audio system and compatibility with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. For professionals, the Leaf e + is also available in a new Business version from € 40,200.
As for the Leaf 40 kWh, the construction of the 2021 range remains identical with a price ranging from 33,900 to 40,550 € depending on the finish chosen.
In France, orders for the Nissan LEAF 2021 have just opened in the Nissan network. The first deliveries are expected in early 2021.
The Nissan Leaf 2021 does not bring a revolution but some nice evolutions. Will this be enough to boost sales? Nothing is less sure ! On the technical side, the Japanese sedan remains blocked by its obsessive choice of the CHAdeMO, which remains a big brake on the purchase for purists who realize that the Combo is clearly taking the ascendancy over the Japanese standard.
The other problem is the size of the vehicle in a sector where the offer is growing. Where most of the electric market is concentrated in city cars and SUVs, Nissan is going against the grain with its sedan. A situation that is also observed at Hyundai. Where the Ioniq has been limited to fewer than 700 registrations since the start of the year, the Kona is a hit with more than 4,000 units sold over the same period.
