what is the ideal configuration for the new starlet?

Launched in 2020, the Fiat 500 Electric arrives in the brand’s catalog. But if this third generation is exclusively electric, countless versions and configuration possibilities are offered in the catalog. We are taking stock to find our way.

The Fiat 500 is the undisputed starlet in the city car segment. But his reign was threatened with the advent of electric chips, especially the Mini Cooper SE and Honda e. The only solution for the manufacturer: to review the copy in detail in order to offer it a battery and a mechanism without emission. A revolution that is also accompanied by new novelty, including an astonishing version with three side doors.

Fiat 500 3 + 1: the choice of originality

A stylistic (and practical) pirouette made possible by the presence of a brand new platform, which differs from those of the 2nd generation thermals still available in the catalog. 6 cm longer to be able to carry the battery, the Turinoise offers a small service door with opposing opening on the passenger side. A system that evokes the Mazda RX-8 and RX-30, the BMW i3 or the Toyota FJ Cruiser.

In this 3 + 1 configuration, the Fiat 500 Electric is asking for an extension of € 2,000 at all trim levels (entry-level Action unavailable with three doors). How you use it will determine which body is best suited to your needs. On the other hand, the stylistic originality prevails over the price criterion, where the extension is however more measured than with the Cabrio (+ € 3,400 or + € 3,000 depending on the level of finish).

The Icon Plus version is the best positioned

The Fiat 500 Electric 3 + 1 does not offer access to the small 23.8 kWh battery, or even to the France Edition version. Good thing is the four trim levels to choose from Passion, Icon, Icon Plus and La Prima. As usual, the entry-level version struggles to satisfy with a presentation too banal for a chic car, even if its electric range of 322 km is more generous than the 306 km of the Icon Plus. The advantage of the unsightly 15-inch rims.

While the Icon version stands out with its more refined style, it cannot compete with the Icon Plus version: with the simple cosmetic options, the Icon makes up the price difference of € 2,000 with the Icon Plus. At the other end, the La Prima version struggles to justify its exclusive little touches against an additional cost of € 3,400. It is therefore the Icon Plus finish that is the most reasonable, with a price between the two extremes, although its standard panoramic roof drops the WLTP range to 306 km due to its greater weight.

The Fiat 500 3 + 1 is available with nine colors divided into four families. As usual, only one color is offered in series (Ice White Pastel) and you have to put your hand in your pocket for more choices, among always dark shades. Onyx Black Pastel is priced the same as metallic paints. The matt livery (as on the model in our video test) and tri-layer require a check for € 1,200. Here we subjectively select Glacier Blue. In the exterior equipment, Fiat offers various chrome rods. We will keep the side and window trim strips (a total of € 500) but will leave the hood molding.

Driving aids available in packs

The interior offers four configurations, with Seaqual Black / Gray or Gray / Blue upholstery, and a body-colored or Techno Wood dashboard. Preferring exterior references, we opted for Gray / Blue upholstery and a body-colored dashboard. The list of options ends there, as this version comes standard with the Uconnect 10.25-inch central screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Several option packs are offered here, including the very complete Fiat Co-driver pack with 360 ° cameras, blind spot detector, adaptive cruise control with lane keeping and heated exterior mirrors. These can be accompanied by the Winter pack with a de-icing windshield and heated front seats, still useful in an electric car.

€ 37,099 for our ideal Electric Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 Electric is available as standard with a CCS Combo socket. It has an 85 kW fast charging system (0-80% in 35 minutes) and a three-phase 11 kW on-board AC charger. The latter can be connected to the dedicated Easy Wallbox available at a price of 499 €. A Mode 3 cable is also offered in the list of options, but its usefulness does not justify the 300 € claimed.

Available from € 24,500 at the very bottom of the range, and from € 29,500 in a 3 + 1 version, our ideal Fiat 500 is priced at € 37,099. Or 3,599 € of options, which bring our copy to the level of La Prima, without the panoramic sunroof (550 €). Properly equipped, it was therefore more affordable than an entry-level Mini Cooper SE Greenwich.

Author’s opinion

The configurator of the Fiat 500 Electric is nothing new. At each stage, the five still views available update the city car according to the configurations selected. At any time, a good quality 360 ° 3D mode is also available. The configuration steps are clear and arranged on the right of the screen.

However, the online tool is distinguished by the presence of audio tracks that allow you to listen to the sounds made by the car when starting, in driving condition and when stopped. Also, all the functions provided by a pack can be viewed through animations, which make it possible to understand how the driving aids work. Finally, when one of these packs affects consumption, Fiat issues an alert. A delicate note, but the manufacturer does not specify in what proportion the autonomy is affected.

For its new 500 Electric, Fiat has developed many tools to explore the world of the model. In addition to the conventional images which can be edited perfectly during configuration, the Italian manufacturer capitalizes on the 3D system which allows you to tour the city car. The tool is accessible at any time in the configurator, but also on the model’s home page where it is already possible to select a few colors.

But to go further, the manufacturer has made available the Casa 500, a virtual museum where it is possible to learn about the history of previous models. At the far end of the museum is a copy of the 500 Electric, where you can turn on the lights, open the doors, start the engine and even watch all the animations on the two digital screens.
