Monday 27

Since 2011, the small Vosges company has managed to make a name and a reputation apart in the world of electric bikes. Recipe ? A funny name, a design recognizable by the particular shape of the raised handlebars, very comfortable, top-of-the-range models with neat finishes and equipped with the best Bosch engines. And despite important prices, Mustache is very successful, especially with its very first model, Monday, recently renewed. With an open frame, a robust construction, a solid assistance, it is the switch par excellence, accomplice of the neologisms that have appeared since, like “vélotaf”… After 9 years, it was time to make it evolve and Mustache renamed it Monday … 27 to support its changes in continuity.

The formula remains the same, but evolved to offer the best of current technology. If the general very classic look remains the same, what is obvious is the weight of the main bar of the aluminum frame which now contains an integrated and removable Bosch PowerTube battery (400 or 500 Wh depending on version). A more elegant, safer and better solution for the center of gravity of the bike than the battery in the luggage carrier of the previous generation. 27, it is also a reference to the size of its balloon tires (Schwalbe Super Moto-X 27.5 x 2.4) with anti-puncture reinforcements which play an aesthetic role, but above all, important for comfort, we will come back to that. The Bosch motor at the bottom bracket is also nicely integrated, partly hidden by the frame. Depending on the version (27.1, 27.3 or 27.5), it is chosen from the Active Line Plus or Performance Line range, with 50 or 65 Nm of assist torque respectively. The typical handlebar of the brand incorporates cables and a removable Bosch Intuvia central counter with remote control at the base of the left handle. This system is offline and does not offer navigation like other Bosch dashboards. Fortunately, a precious USB socket will allow you to power your smartphone placed on an adaptable support for navigation. No possibility, however, to locate the bike remotely or see its charge level on an app.

Side load capacity, the handlebars and the front wheel can accommodate an optional luggage rack, while the rear luggage rack is designed to accommodate up to 27 kg with the installation of a baby seat or a basket ( MIK HD system) or saddlebags (QL3 system with Ortlieb), both easy to clip. A small Dutch bike lock is integrated to block the rear wheel, but it will otherwise be better to secure such a machine! The lighting is built into the bike, with a fixed headlight that won’t turn with the handlebars, that’s a shame. Finally, 5 strong colors are available: shiny black, shiny curry, shiny terracotta, matt midnight blue (our main test bike), matt mint. The Monday 27 is offered in a unique size and is recommended for riders between 1.57 and 1.90 m.

Speeds or variator

Depending on the version, the drivetrain varies between Shimano Deore 10-speed or, for the top of the range 27.5, a 380% Enviolo TR variable drivetrain. We were able to test both variants with the Bosch Performance motor, delivering a maximum of 300% assistance: it sends! Choosing between the two transmissions requires a test to really find out which system is best suited to one’s habits and tastes. We have found the 10-speed solution easier and more efficient, especially when there are steep inclines. On the other side of the coin, the gearshifts sometimes lack a little smoothness, which contrasts with the general feeling of softness provided by this model. The Enviolo variator is confusing at first: you have to play with the rotating ring near the handle (a little hard at first, but it should relax after a little use) to give more or less gear to the transmission.

With some practice, the system is effective, but it will not be intended for all cyclists. 5 electric assistance modes are on the program (Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo and… Off), to gently favor efficiency, fitness or autonomy, not specified, but depending on the driving style, with a battery of 500 Wh, it should be possible to travel up to approximately 80 km. In addition, there is also a mode to help push the bike when walking alongside, which can come in handy for pedestrian areas or in case of a puncture. Charging should take approximately 4.5 hours.

Serene comfort

Mustache has chosen not to offer a suspension on this model, the damping being provided by the large air volume of the large tires and the suspended seat post with 40 mm of travel, in particular for reasons of weight, driving precision and reliability. And in use, even on degraded pavements and when passing through holes as we often find in Paris, such as on cobblestone pavements, the level of comfort has proven to be quite satisfactory. The braking entrusted to two Shimano MT200 hydraulic discs is very powerful and reassuring, but it is regrettable that the brand has not looked at ABS cycling solutions now on the market, very heavy apparently. Weight, in fact, is not necessarily the first concern here for this bike favoring comfort, robustness and carrying capacity. We can estimate it at around 24 kilos, like the previous generation, but fortunately, it does not feel on the handlebars or in maneuvers with the nice balance of the whole.

What is felt most is the addition requested for this high-end urban. So it will take € 2,799 for the access model 27.1, € 3,199 for the 27.3 and its large 500 Wh battery or € 3,699 for the 27.5 and its variable transmission. An investment that can be justified for this range, well designed as a vehicle for intensive daily use.
